Below is a list of known issues we are tracking for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. Note that this is not a comprehensive list; we will continue to update it with new issues as they are reported and fixed, will only include the most visible or disruptive issues that prevent you from enjoying the game, and will never include exploits that could be leveraged to gain an unfair advantage over other players.
If you encounter a bug that is not listed below, take a moment to visit the official Age of Empires forum and report the problem:
- Visit the official Age of Empires Forum.
- Click 'Report a Bug' in the Age of Empires II category.
- ALWAYS search the sub-forum for similar issues before creating a new post.
- If the issue has already been reported, add a comment to the existing thread.
- If the issue has not been reported, start a new thread.

ISSUE STATUS KEY
Issues have been marked with a status that best represents their current state:
A tracked bug means that it has been reproduced by our test team. The team now has to determine whether and how they solve the issue: whether it requires a fix, a change to the design or code of the game, or if there are other solutions that need to be considered.

Once a fix has been identified, it needs to be tested and packaged with a game update. Note that this is not always the very next update: a fix may be held for additional testing or to be paired with other similar fixes.
Once the fix is available in the game, we'll check things off of the list. Eventually, these items will be hidden to make way for other issues as they are identified, tracked, and prioritized.
TRACKED (KNOWN) ISSUES
These are issues which have been reported and reproduced by our Quality Assurance (or Test) team. Issues are listed in the areas of the game they impact, below, and in no particular order.
GAMEPLAY
Crashes in Campaign/Standard Matches |
We’re seeing continued reports that some users are experiencing crashes when trying to play Campaign or Standard matches. We’ve added some additional logging to help us track these down, and we’ve been getting helpful information from that logging in recent PUP builds.
If your game is crashing, we ask that you reach out to our Support Team for solutions and to provide our team with more information about the issue. You may be asked to submit files that give us important information about why you’re experiencing problems, and perhaps even directed to PUPP to help us confirm if we’ve been able to resolve your issue.

Scenario Editor: direct_placement or grouped_by_team affects player land generation in consecutive maps |
If direct_placement or grouped_by_team is used when generating a map in the editor, additional maps generated in the same editor session will not do so properly. Until this can be fixed (tentatively aiming for the quarterly update), a workaround is to restart the title to ensure maps are generated properly. |

Unable to Reconnect |
We are working on a solution in addition to improvements to ensure that players can quickly and easily reconnect to their games when they disconnect or drop due to a network or Xbox Live issue. We hear you and recognize the frustration this can cause. |

In some circumstances, naval units will fail to display their health bar. |

Hero unit glow (and other visual effects) can disappear when too many units are visible on screen. |
While this was partially fixed in the July update, there is still an issue where the hero glow, blood, and other visual effects can disappear in large-scale battles. We are working on a more permanent fix for a future update. |

Ranged attacks have a low chance of hitting Dire Wolves. |

"Sheep Hoarder" achievement is not unlocked when 20 sheep are gathered. |

The team has a fix in the works for this issue. It appears that changes to how the game identifies certain objects results in the achievement being blocked. |

Campaign achievements unlocking early |
This issue has been resolved in Hotfix 44834. Please let us know if you continue to be awarded Lords of the West achievements without completing the listed requirements, as we have taken steps to resolve this. If you continue to experience it, please visit our forum and describe what you were doing when the achievements were rewarded, and whether or not you were rewarded other achievements or event challenge unlocks at the same time. |

NOT A BUG
Sometimes things can seem like an issue that are actually a part of the game's design. Here are some of those unique "issues" with the reasoning as to why they are the way they are. This does not mean they cannot be changed, but that they should be treated as a discussion rather than a bug.
Sicilians: Donjon does not count as a Feudal Age building when advancing to the Castle Age. |
The Donjon is treated as a Tower that is unique to the Sicilians. Similar to Towers of other civilizations, this means that it doesn't count towards fulfilling the building requirement to advance to the next Age. |

Burgundians: Converted Villagers do not become Flemish Militia after researching the Flemish Revolution technology. |
Similar to other units in the game, converted units never benefit from upgrades researched after their conversion. This, too, applies to any Villagers wololo'd over to your side. |
