Age of Mythology: Retold Steam Deck Troubleshooting – Age of Empires Support

If you are encountering an issue with Age of Mythology: Retold on Steam Deck, please try the following troubleshooting steps below.

🛠 Make sure your game is updated to the most recent version

While your Steam Deck may be set to automatically install any new game updates, it is possible that these updates failed to install properly, or that an essential update was skipped.

Navigate to Settings from the Steam Deck home screen
Locate and select System
Click on Software Updates

🛠 Restart your Steam Deck and rest the graphics drivers

To try and resolve some crashing issues players may encounter on the Steam Deck, we can try to reset the graphics APU/driver. Doing so can sometimes fix a lot of crashes people encounter.

Hold Power button for 10 Seconds.
While the Steam Deck is off please press and hold the Volume down button (Vol-) & Quick Access button ( … ) then press Power.
When you hear it chirp let go of only the Power button, while still keeping hold of the Vol- & Quick Access button, until you see the Steam logo, then let go of those buttons too.
If this is performed correctly the Steam Deck will take a minute or so to boot back up.
Once everything is back on, try loading into the game again

🛠 Put your batter into Storage Mode and wake it with your charger

Power down your Steam Deck.
Once off, hold down the Volume Up button (Vol+) and press the Power button.
Release both buttons.
The Steam Deck should power up, booting into the BIOS menu.
Once in the BIOS menu, navigate to Setup Utility > Power > Select Battery storage mode > Select Yes to confirm
While in Storage Mode, your Steam Deck won't respond to Power button presses. To exit storage mode, plug your Steam Deck into the charger.

🛠 Disable any third party applications

While Age of Mythology: Retold is running, make sure that no other third party application is running in the background. If there are other applications running, make sure to close or disable them and then restart your system: Steam > Power > Restart.

🛠 Uninstall & Reinstall the game

Sometimes a games may install with corrupted files. One way to try and fix this is to uninstall and reinstall the game.

Click on the Steam button and navigate to the main menu
Go to your Library
Select Age of Mythology: Retold
Press the Options button (≡)
Navigate to Manage and then press the Right directional button on the D-pad
Navigate to and select Uninstall
Restart your Steam Deck (Steam > Power > Restart)
Reinstall the game through your library

🛠 Use Windows, Experimental, or Ubuntu instead of Proton

Age of Mythology: Retold will not launch when running Proton.
