This error occurs when your game was unable to successfully download one or more server-side patches.
🛠 Confirm that Windows Time is Set to the Appropriate Region & Time Zone
In some instances, if your Windows Time is not accurately set to your current region and time zone, the game may have trouble communicating with the server for updates.
- Type “region settings” into the Windows Search Bar and click Enter
- Check that the region listed under the country & region dropdown is accurate
- Click Date & Time from the left-side navigation menu
- Check that your time zone is correctly listed from the dropdown menu
- Under Synchronize your Clock click Sync Now
- Restart your machine
- Launch the game
🛠 Delete your Age of Empires IV Folder
It is possible that the patch failed to download properly, but may be partially downloaded to your Age of Empires IV folder. Deleting the folder will reset your patch history.
- Open File Explorer
- Go to QuickAccess > Documents > MyGames
- Locate and delete the Age of Empires IV folder
- Relaunch the game
🛠 Please check that you are remaining connected to the internet
- Run Task Manager
- Go to the Performance tab
- Then launch the game
- You should see continuing activity in your WiFi connection.
If you see the graph stop reporting data at the same time you get this pop-up, you may want to change to a landline connection.
🛠 Please close other internet-intensive applications
Sometimes other applications can take priority internet usage away from your game. If you are unsure if other applications may be internet or network intensive:
- Run Task Manager
- Go to the Processes tab
- Sort the list by Network Usage (you may have to scroll to the right to find this column)
- Then launch the game
If you see another application starting to take a larger percent of your network, it may be causing interference.
🛠 Turn off VPNs
Security settings on some VPNs can prevent some applications, from accessing the internet or downloading updates. Please try disabling your VPN to see if the patch is able to download.
